About School Bus Safety Awareness Week

Observed every year during the third full week of October, National School Bus Safety Week is a time to bring awareness to the importance of keeping students safe on and around school buses. It’s an opportunity for parents, students, teachers, motorists, school bus drivers, and school communities to come together and highlight safe practices. Across Nova Scotia and beyond, this week serves as a reminder that school bus safety is a shared responsibility; on the road, at the bus stop, and in classrooms.

Celebrate Bus Safety Awareness with Safety Services Nova Scotia

Safety Services Nova Scotia is proud to lead School Bus Safety Week across the province. We’re making it easy for schools, families, and communities to get involved with:

  • Drawing contest: Encourage youth to show off their creativity while highlighting the importance of bus safety. Winning entries will be shared province-wide

  • Educational resources: Ready-to-use posters, tip sheets, and videos available for download and sharing.

  • Classroom support: Invite SSNS into your school for an interactive safety session or a hands-on bus safety training exercise.

Educational Resources

Looking for ways to include school bus safety lessons into your home or class? We’ve created a short lesson plan, printable lesson cards and a list of Nova Scotia free video resources you can use!

We’re inviting youth across the province to take part in our School Bus Safety Awareness Week Drawing Contest! This is a great way to show your creativity while helping to spread the message in our communities that school bus safety matters. The winner gets a $100 VISA gift card.

Invite us into your school for an Educational Talk!

Safety Services Nova Scotia can visit your school during School Bus Safety Week, October 20th - 24th, 2025 and deliver a fun, engaging safety 30-minute talk tailored to your students between grades 2 and 5, for free!

Our presentation is designed to help children understand the importance of safe behaviour on and around school buses, using age-appropriate language, interactive activities, and memorable visuals.
