Restricted Firearms Safety Course

*IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING RESTRICTED FIREARMS COURSE

The Canadian Federal Government has put a freeze on the sale, purchase, or transfer of handguns in Canada until Bill C-21 passes. Certain individuals and businesses will be exempt. This course will still allow you to apply for a Restricted Firearms licence, it currently will not allow you to purchase a restricted firearm. This course will also allow any individual who wishes to seek employment with a business or company that requires a Restricted Firearms Licence.

We are waiting on an announcement and further instructions from the Government. At such time, we will post any developments or changes that will affect the Restricted Firearms Safety course.


Basic Course Information

*Please note the Non-Restricted course is required before completing the Restricted course.

Safety Services Nova Scotia is proud to offer the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC). This course was developed as a result of ongoing interest in firearms safety, and is offered in accordance with Section 7 of the Firearms Act.

  • Cost: $80 + HST ($92.00) where applicable (effective Apr 1, 2022)
    **Please note that this fee is payable at time of registration and is non-refundable**

  • Duration: Approximately 9 hours

Upon successful completion of this course, applicants 18 years or older will be provided with the necessary documents to apply for their Possession & Acquisition Licence (PAL), with Restricted certification (RPAL). Once obtained, a Possession & Acquisition Licence allows the holder the privilege to buy or possess restricted firearms and/or ammunition. 

There is no minimum age for this course. However, minors will need written permission observed by the course instructor from a parent or guardian to take the course. Minors attend for informational purposes but cannot take the examinations and they will NOT receive a student record.

What You'll Need

  • Pen & paper: You will be responsible for your own writing materials and taking your own notes.

  • Government-issued ID.

Outcomes

Students must achieve a pass mark of 80% in both the written and practical examinations in order to successfully complete this course. By the end of the course, successful students will be able to handle restricted firearms and ammunition safely, identify and embrace the social responsibilities of firearm ownership, comply with all firearms laws and regulations, knowledgeably and safely store and transport restricted and ammunition.
