Qualitative Fit Testing

What is Qualitative Fit Testing (QLFT)?

A properly fitted respirator is essential for effective protection. Qualitative fit testing is a pass/fail method that evaluates whether a respirator provides an adequate seal. This test relies on the individual’s ability to detect a bitter agent introduced during the assessment. If the wearer does not sense the agent, the respirator fit may need adjustment or a different size/model.

Comprehensive Respirator Guidance

During the fit test, we go beyond simply assessing the seal. We provide expert guidance to ensure individuals know how to properly use and maintain their respirators. This includes:

  • Donning & Doffing – Correct techniques for putting on and removing the respirator to ensure a secure fit and prevent contamination.

  • Storage & Cleaning – Best practices for maintaining the respirator to extend its lifespan and uphold safety standards.

  • Cartridge Change-Out – Understanding when and how to replace cartridges for continued protection.

  • Inspection Procedures – Checking for wear, damage, or issues that could impact effectiveness.

Before you Arrive:

Please ensure you:

  • Bring the respirator you require fit testing for. We cannot complete the fit test without the respirator.

  • Arrive clean-shaven in the area where the respirator seals to your face. Facial hair can prevent a proper seal and may result in an unsuccessful fit test.

  • Avoid eating, drinking (except water), chewing gum, smoking, or vaping for at least 20 minutes before your appointment.

  • Arrive a few minutes early to complete any required paperwork and ensure your appointment starts on time.
